The NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and ChargePoint have scored a touchdown by boosting electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure within Atlanta. The Atlanta Falcons and ChargePoint had a kickoff event at their most recent home against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Georgia Dome on December 14th to educate fans about EV charging.
The Atlanta Falcons training facility, Georgia World Congress Center, Georgia Dome, College Football Hall of Fame, and Arthur Blank Family Offices will have the new charging stations. ChargePoint has also given charging stations for Atlanta to install.
Georgia has a policy for Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) credits for the lesser of either 20% or $5,000 on an EV, which has helped Georgia’s growing appetite for electric cars.
EVs have nearly doubled in Fulton County within six months, from 3,063 in December 2013, to 6,027 in June 2014. Currently, 14,200 plug-in electric vehicles are on Georgia roadways.
Director of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability Denise Quarles stressed the need for accessible charging stations to meet solid EV demand within Atlanta.
“We are excited to add the additional ChargePoint stations to our inventory and look forward to seeing the addition of more across the city,” Quarles added.
“ChargePoint’s stations will allow us to continue our focus on sustainable business practices and will hopefully introduce a new audience to the benefits of driving an EV vehicle,” said Greg Beadles, Atlanta Falcons Executive Vice President.
The NFL continues to move forward in environmental sustainability. The San Francisco 49ers opened its LEED-Gold Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara this season. Last year’s Super Bowl was held at environmentally friendly MetLife Stadium. In 2012, Juhl Wind helped offset the Minnesota Vikings’ carbon emissions thanks to supplying renewable energy credits from a local wind farm. It’s clear that NFL teams are listening to fans who want more done to encourage a more sustainable planet.
