Though in the automotive industry computer-based simulation increasingly displace physical tests of new developments, in many cases real tests still are essential, and they are generating increasing amounts of test data. Though these data are generated by different test systems, it is important that they can be interpreted, compared and processed correctly disregarding of their source. Therefore they need to be stored along with the related metadata in a platform-spanning and manufacturer independent format. Industry-wide, there is a standard in place for this purpose: Open Data Service (ODS), defined by the Association for Standardisation of Automation and Measuring Systems (ASAM).
Over the past couple of years, an open community with about 30 automotive OEMs, suppliers and service providers has come into being which in a lose collaboration has developed openMDM, a building set of methods and software building blocks. Now, with the launch of the openMDM Eclipse Working Group has been born as a place to speed the development and acceptance of openMDM globally. Besides carmakers Audi, BMW and Daimler, the group counts software maker Gigatronik GmbH, Science + Computing AG, Cangoo Engineering, HighQSoft GmbH and Peak Solution GmbH among its members.
The working group intends to funnel the requirements towards openMDM and to initialise Eclipse Open Source projects for the development of new products as well as for further developing existing ones. At the same time, it organises funding, quality assurance and version management of these products.
First projects have already been launched. For example, the openMDM core system as well as the software components for web frontends and Rich Clients will undergo further development.
The working group is open for further interesting parties, be them carmakers, suppliers or engineering service providers, the group emphasised in a press statement.
