The Eindhoven-based firm’s ArenaVision LED floodlighting system will be installed at the 41,000-capacity stadium in time for Chelsea’s preseason friendly match against Spanish side Real Sociedad.
The new lighting was installed during this summer’s break in time for the start of the new football season. The first match-day use will be on August 12 when Chelsea plays a friendly against Real Sociedad. In addition, the club is also upgrading its lighting at its training ground, installing the same family of Philips LED floodlighting to deliver a similar lighting performance when training as on match days. With the new system it is possible to light specific areas of the training ground to different illuminance levels to create the ideal practice environment for players.
Chelsea is claiming to be one of the first top-flight soccer club in the world to complete an upgrade to LED pitch lighting. In June 2014 Southampton FC confirmed that Hampshire-based Premier league club would also be making the switch to LED floodlighting.
In May 2014 German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich struck a similar deal with Philips which also includes their stadium’s outer façade.
Unlike traditional lighting systems which can take up to 30 minutes to warm up the Philips’ LED system is able to be switched on and off in an instant. The lighting system also meets the Premier League’s new broadcasting standards for high definition TV.
The new broadcasting standards agreed by the Premier League include specifications for super slow-motion replays, and flicker which is well supported by LED lighting solutions. As a result it is likely that a number of other Premier League will also be installing LED floodlighting this season.
