REED Industrial Minerals says it has completed a semi-pilot plant that can directly produce better-than-battery-grade lithium hydroxide.
The semi-pilot plant leverages RIM’s proprietary purification and electrolysis process, delivering high-purity lithium hydroxide that exceeds the published battery- grade specifications from existing leading suppliers.
Lithium hydroxide is used in breathing gas purification systems to remove carbon dioxide. It is also used as a heat transfer medium, and as an electrolyte in storage batteries.
According to RIM, it has demonstrated that is purification and electrolysis process can be reproduced and scaled up successfully. The durability of the ion exchange membrane has also been tested and found to be suited for commercial operation.
The RIM process allows it to use existing and new Chlor-Alkali package-plants, which electrolyse sodium chloride to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide, to produce lithium hydroxide by purifying and electrolysing lithium chloride solutions obtained from mineral or brine feedstocks.
