Nagoya: Toyota Motor Corp. subsidiary Primearth EV Energy Co. Tuesday said it will increase its production capacity for nickel metal hydride batteries used in hybrid cars.
To meet increasing demand for fuel-efficient cars, the Shizuoka-based subsidiary will expand its production capacity at its plant in Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan, to 500,000 cars worth of rechargeable batteries from the current 300,000.
The company already announced last December it will expand the capacity to 400,000 cars worth by the spring of 2015.
When the latest plan is completed, it will have capacity to supply batteries for 1.4 million hybrid cars annually.
Primearth EV Energy, with annual sales of 150 billion yen for fiscal 2013 and a workforce of 3,300, manufactures batteries used in such Toyota models as Prius and Yaris as well as Mazda Motor Corp’s Axela.
