Pictures of Tesla’s new underground Supercharger station in London recently came to my attention, and while I won’t say that I’m surprised by them (given Elon Musk’s flair for the dramatic/stylish/futuristic), they are more interesting than I would have guessed.
Who would have thought that what is, essentially, just a gas station, could look so interesting. (Not necessarily a knock on the design, but the neon-red lights do make me feel like I’m in a nightclub or something. I’ll take that over the atmosphere of a gas station any day of the week.)
Owing to Musk’s notorious need to have a hand (and a say) in everything, and to get everything just right, I’m curious how much he had to do with the design. I’m getting an image in my mind right now of him sitting down at a desk at night very meticulously designing this thing, and lmao. Still, you can’t argue with results, can you?
Chris Demorro of GAS2 (and CleanTechnica) provides some thoughts:
This is, quite simply, the best-looking EV charging station around, bar none. The capacity, lighting, and sheer sci-fi look of this underground Supercharger station is hands-down the new champ. It’s just in time too, as EV sales have never been better in the UK.
It’s little things like this that are helping set Tesla apart from the crowd. While Nissan and BMW are planning to install fast chargers at local dealerships, Tesla is building much sexier charging stations that make even the pedestrian act of plugging in your EV seem way, way cooler. Tesla could have designed a much simpler Supercharger station itself, but even the look of the plug dock was given a lot of consideration in the pursuit of a sweet and sleek design. Musk has a clear vision of what the 21st century should look like, and he’s doing his damndest to make it happen.
Which of our readers have had (or will have) the good fortune of using these thigns? Feel free to share your thoughts…
