The Iranian defense minister on Tuesday inaugurated the country’s first-ever factory manufacturing various types of rechargeable lithium batteries for both military and civilian applications.
In the factory’s inaugural ceremony, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said it has been set up by local experts of the Organization of Energy Resources Promotion, a subsidiary of the country’s Defense Ministry, Tasnim News Agency reported.
“The new plant has an annual production capacity of 2.5 million ampere-hours (Ah) generated by different types of flat and cylindrical rechargeable batteries for civilian and military applications,” he said.
“The factory will meet the demands of the country’s armed forces.”
With 11 manufacturing units and a laboratory equipped with advanced apparatus for quality control, the industrial plant produces 16 types of large format and cylindrical lithium batteries.
There are two kinds of lithium batteries, both of which contain very high levels of energy, usually in small cases.
Lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries, which are rechargeable, are commonly used in consumer electronics, such as in mobile phones and laptops. The second type includes lithium metal batteries, which are non-rechargeable.
