PARIS (Reuters) — PSA/Peugeot-Citroen CEO Carlos Tavares said the carmaker will decide in the next 12 months whether to continue working on electric vehicles with Mitsubishi Motors.
Tavares told a parliamentary economic affairs committee today that the group needed to define a strategy to continue to offer electric vehicles to consumers.
“It’s a strategy that will be rebuilt in the next 12 months, and we will consider whether we develop them alone, in partnership, and where we will build them,” the CEO said, adding that the strength of the yen was an important factor.
Mitsubishi has built the Citroen C-Zero and Peugeot iOn battery powered minicars for PSA at its Mizushima plant in Japan since 2010 following an agreement to supply a total of 100,000 of the vehicles. Both are sister models to the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.
Last year, Citroen sold 651 C-Zeros in Europe, down from 3,142 the year before, according to JATO Dynamics market researchers. Sales of the Peugeot iOn fell to 455 from 3,080. Mitsubishi sold 880 i-MiEV cars in Europe in 2013, down from 1,635.
