Self-powered EnOcean sensor kit gets designers up

Element14 Pty Ltd announces the launch of a new self-powered sensor kit for designers and enthusiasts to get up and running with home and building automation systems.

Requiring no cables or batteries, EnOcean sensor kits can be used with the EnOcean Pi for a wide variety of applications including switching lights, controlling blinds as well as acquiring wireless sensor information such as temperature and window/door status detection.

Ideal for home automation applications, the self-powered wireless sensors and a switch can directly communicate with an intelligent smart home server via the EnOcean standardised ultra-low power radio protocol, offering a reliable wireless communication with a range of up to 30 metres in buildings.

Key features of EnOcean sensor kits include a set of three wireless sensors; push button, magnet contact switch and temperature sensor; sub 1 GHz frequencies for worldwide use: 902MHz, 868MHz & 315MHz; EnOcean radio standard ISO/IEC 14543-3-10; maintenance-free; plug-and-play energy harvesting solution; miniature battery-less switch module; solar-powered temperature sensor and magnet contact; and compatibility with more than 1,200 products in the EnOcean ecosystem.

The EnOcean sensor kit is highly suitable for home automation applications that require remote sensing and remote control via tablets or smart phones. For example, the Raspberry Pi is an ideal platform to set up a smart home server where the EnOcean Pi acts as a bridge to the EnOcean switches and sensors providing data and status information.

David Shen, CTO at element14 says the EnOcean sensor kit combines state-of-the-art energy harvesting with ultra-low power sensors to create a unique automation solution for use with the Raspberry Pi.

The EnOcean sensor kit is available from Farnell element14 in Europe, Newark element14 in North America and element14 in APAC, all with next-day delivery.
