If proper respect for nature means treading lightly on the landscape, Modscape perfectly captures that theory in this self-sustaining Tintaldra cabin in Victoria, Australia. Located on the southern banks of the Murray River, this off-the-grid retreat is equipped with solar panels, a septic tank, and a rainwater tank to ensure minimal environmental impact. The minimalist design was created so as not to detract from the views of the surrounding mountainous landscape.
Commissioned by a client who spends the majority of his time overseas, the 1,033-square-foot dwelling needed to be able to withstand long periods of vacancy and require easy and minimal maintenance. Modscape’s resulting design is a self-sufficient single-module cabin clad in new zincalume and a top layer of recycled zincalume. Viewed from afar, the cabin recedes into the landscape and takes on the appearance of a vernacular shed.
In contrast to its unassuming exterior, the open-plan interior comprises crisp, contemporary lines and furnishings. Oak flooring, timber decking, and a Nectre wood fireplace add a rustic twist to the otherwise all-modern floor plan. The cabin was completed at a cost of AUD $192,000.
