The dream of flying cars dates back to the 1960s when the animated series “The Jetsons” envisioned a future where these airborne vehicles dominate the sky. In the past few years the flying car concept has evolved with a few real prototypes, but few are as wild as the Skylys flying car from Mix Aerospace.
Albeit still in the beginning stages, the Skylys flying car from Mix Aerospace would be a personal airborne vehicle similar to Terrafugia’s TF-X flying car, but with a few important modifications. The Skylys is a four-wheeled electric car that travels down the road like any ordinary EV, but when traffic gets bad or the driver wants to cover greater distances, the vehicle can be attached to a set of wings and transformed into a flying car.
Also unlike other flying car concepts that are too big for a tight, congested city, the Skylys concept features a mini electric vehicle that can easily zoom around cities like New York City. But then, when the need arises, it can be transformed into a helicopter with a detachable propulsion module. Mix Aerospace says that the idea is to “easily commute between airports or even from building to building, for example in Brasilia or Dubai. Not only to decongest cities or flee pollution but to gain time.”
Mix Aerospace predicts that initially the Skylys flying car would be used for civil protection, firefighters, ambulances, or rescue missions. Right now the company is trying to raise $3 million to take the idea from simply a concept to a full fledged company with its headquarters located somewhere in Silicon Valley. If the group raises the money it needs, the first Skylys flying car could go into production as early as 2018.
