The YotaPhone 2’s five-inch touchscreen front display features a crisp high-definition 1080p AMOLED screen typically associated with a premium smartphone but the device’s back features an ultra-low power always-on greyscale e-ink touchscreen display which is similar to a Kindle’s screen. The e-ink display has a refresh rate of 0.012 seconds.
The YotaPhone 2 can be controlled from either side as a fully integrated Android smartphone. The device answers the demand from the Android community to mirror the whole Android experience on an eInk display. Called YotaMirror the solution allows any Android app to run on the low-power display. Custom applications all use the second display for ‘always on’ functionality although not every feature or facility is available. The dual-action phone provides the opportunity for any application to be made available on the back screen, even if it is not perfectly optimized.
Yota Devices claims that the eInk screen draws seven times less power than the 1080p AMOLED screen on the front of the device. By using the phone’s eBook software a user can have up to five days of reading on a single charge and two days of basic smartphone functions if you configure the company’s YotaEnergy energy saving software.
Because the eInk image remains visible even when the phone is off (or runs out of power) it can employ many useful applications, such as leaving a local map up on the back screen, keeping a boarding pass for an airline flight visible at all times, or offering full screen music player controls and album art that is always available.
Yota claims the device can manage 100 hours of reading on a single battery charge.
In the UK Yota Phone 2 will retail at £555.
