For a longer battery life: Pushing lithium ion batteries to the next performance level

Summary: Conventional lithium ion batteries have reached performance limits. Scientists have now developed a new nanostructured anode material for lithium ion batteries, which extends the capacity and cycle life of the batteries. Based on a mesoporous mixed metal oxide in combination with graphene, the material could provide a new approach how to make better use of batteries in large devices

3D-printed lithium-ion batteries

This LED bangle, including a lithium-ion battery, was made entirely by 3D printing.     Credit: American Chemical Society Electric vehicles and most electronic devices, such as cell phones and laptop computers, are powered by lithium-ion batteries. Until now, manufacturers have had to design their devices around the size and shape of commercially available batteries. But researchers have developed a new

Renewables Will Make Up 50 Percent of the World’s Energy by 2050

A new analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance says that 50 percent of the world’s energy will come from solar and wind by 2050. In 2015, wind and solar made up only 7 percent of global electricity generation. BNEF, then, is proposing that these energy sources will grow by a full order of magnitude over the next 30 years. This

Focusing on the negative is good when it comes to batteries A new battery concept based on fluoride ions may increase battery lifespans

Imagine not having to charge your phone or laptop for weeks. That is the dream of researchers looking into alternative batteries that go beyond the current lithium-ion versions popular today. Now, in a new study appearing in the journal Science, chemists at several institutions, including Caltech and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed by Caltech for NASA, as well as the Honda Research Institute and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, have hit on a new way of making rechargeable batteries based on fluoride, the negatively charged form, or anion, of the element fluorine.

New battery gobbles up carbon dioxide

A new type of battery developed by researchers at MIT could be made partly from carbon dioxide captured from power plants. Rather than attempting to convert carbon dioxide to specialized chemicals using metal catalysts, which is currently highly challenging, this battery could continuously convert carbon dioxide into a solid mineral carbonate as it discharges.
