Ever wondered when the police and army will get around to going electric? Well, that time may now be here — in China anyways… for some purposes.
The Chinese company Suzhou Zijing Qingyuan New Energy Vehicle Technology Corporation (Zijing Qingyuan) has developed the new Zijing Qingyuan Armored Spherical Cabin Electric Patrol Vehicle with the sole intention of marketing it for use by riot police. The vehicle recently made its debut at the Security China show held in Beijing.
As you can see in the images, the design is certainly an interesting one — the 360-degree view, armored bubble cockpit gives the vehicle a bit of the look of a tank or something. The cockpit also features a camera with a 360-degree view — which would presumably be useful for the identification of protesters/rioters at a later point. Good design I suppose.
The vehicle is armored to what is known as the Level-A standard (in China) — which means that it’s rated to deal with pistol/revolver fire, and nothing stronger. The vehicle has enough space to seat two officers.
The door’s windows feature gun-slots through which the officers will be able to fire, and smoke/stun grenades can be fired through an optional launcher that can be mounted on the front of the vehicle.
The vehicle is powered via an electric motor integrated with a 15-kW-hour battery pack. Single-charge range is estimated to be around 74 miles — and the model possesses a top speed of around 50 mph.
Zijing Qingyuan is based out of the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou, and reportedly specializes in electric vehicles for the law enforcement market.
According to the company, a number of police agencies have already expressed interest in the vehicle.
If I ever end up seeing one of these in person, I’m not sure that I’ll know what exactly to make of it. Lol. Any comments?
