Intelligent PDUs Meet NFPA 79 Category-0 Emergency Stop

API Technologies Corp. now offers its AC SMARTStart® units with a Remote Control Panel (RCP) to support safety requirements such as the NFPA 79 Category-0 Emergency Stop. NFPA 79 is a set of electrical standards for industrial machinery published by the National Fire Protection Association. The NFPA 79 Category-0 Emergency Stop Standard applies to automated test equipment (ATE) for the aerospace and industrial markets as well as simulation and training applications; each of these applications have human interaction with electrical loads where there is potential for catastrophic injury or damage to capital equipment.

The NFPA 79 Category-0 dictates that all power must be removed from connected devices using a single emergency stop switch. It also dictates a two-factor start-up procedure in order to re-power the devices after the emergency stop has been applied in order to protect the operator.

“Many of our power products, such as the AC SMARTStart, are highly effective for remotely controlling power distribution and power sequencing while monitoring power vitals,” said Rob Reese, Engineering Manager, Power Solutions, API Technologies. “By adding a remote control panel with an emergency off switch, we are enabling our customers the ability to easily meet NFPA 79 standards for power, maintaining operator safety, and ultimately saving lives.”
