One of the largest manufacturers of industrial batteries in the world, Saft, recently announced that it would now be offering an extended warranty of up to 15 years for its Li-ion batteries.
The move makes Saft the first Li-ion battery manufacturer in the world to offer such a long warranty.
The confidence isn’t all that surprising considering that extensive testing has shown that the batteries are in fact quite durable — previous research has shown that Saft batteries are actually able to maintain a high capacity even after over 7,000 charge/discharge cycles.
The press release from Saft discusses the specifics of the batteries in questions:
“Saft’s domestic scale ESS solutions are based on its Synerion Li-ion battery modules, each of which delivers around 2 kWh energy and up to 4 kW power. A key initiative for Saft is the launch of an optional warranty extension of up to 15 years for the Synerion Storage Systems installed as part of Bosch’s innovative BPT-S 5 Hybrid intelligent energy management and storage solution.
The technologically mature, fully commercialized Bosch BPT-S 5 Hybrid system, launched in 2012, integrates a solar inverter, an energy management system and Saft’s Synerion modules. It is fully certified and safety tested and Bosch has hundreds of installers trained in the installation of the units.”
15 years is quite a long time for a lithium-ion battery. Not a bad selling point, for sure.
In related news, Germany’s residential battery storage subsidy has shown itself to be a great success. More than 4,000 new solar+battery systems have been installed in the first year.
With those numbers expected to climb even higher this year, perhaps some of the systems sold will feature Saft’s newly “guaranteed-for-15-years” batteries?
