ZMDI and Wurth Partner on Digital Power Solutions

ZMD AG and Wurth Elektronik, eiSosdivision announced the release of the first six products of the ZSPM15xx family of single-phase true-digital power solutions for non-isolated, high-current point-of-load (POL) applications. ZMDI collaborated with Wurth Elektronik on this project by optimizing the ZSPM15xx family for Wurth high performance inductors. The ZSPM15xx’s digital control loop and compensation are pre-configured to provide customers with a fast time-to-market and an easy-to-design solution for high-performance, digitally controlled power supplies when combined with one of Wurth’s WE-HCM family of high performance inductors and one of ZMDI’s integrated MOSFET power stage DrMOS products: ZSPM9000, ZSPM9010, ZSPM9015 or ZSPM9060.

The ZSPM15xx controller’s flexible design allows users to easily select the over-current protection limit, output voltage rise time and control loop compensation via two external resistors to achieve the highest performance in their application. As a global supplier of analog and mixed-signal solutions for automotive, industrial, medical, information technology and consumer applications, ZMDI is introducing the ZSPM15xx product family ICs to expand its energy-efficient Power Management ICs product line with pre-designed, smart point-of-load (POL) solutions.

The initial release will include six products designed to support applications for loads from 10A to 40A with popular bus voltages: 0.85V, 1.0V, 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, and 2.0V. ZMDI also provides bills-of-materials (BOMs) and circuit board layouts to improve customer design cycles, reduce external component cost and minimize application footprint size.

“Customer requirements are highly diverse, and many customers have expressed their desire for a simple-to-use solution with the advantages that our digital power solution provides,” said Hensen Wong, Product Marketing Manager of the ZMDI Power Management Division. “With this simple, easy-to-design approach, ZMDI and Würth Elektronik are able to offer customers a fast time-to-market with high-performance digital point-of-load solutions in popular bus voltages and load capabilities up to 40A.”

Würth Elektronik’s WE-HCM series high performance power inductors were chosen for their balance between size, efficiency and power handling. They offer the lowest core losses with MnZn material, high saturation current ratings and extremely low DCR losses. They are magnetically shielded and engineered for reliability.

“Our customers demand that components such as inductors should never be a bottleneck in the design cycle. Our solution offers an industry-leading part from a manufacturer focused on around-the-clock service and the reduction of lead times. This solution is an ideal fit with ZMDI’s new ZSPM15xx chipset as it minimizes logistical headaches yet provides a high quality product that simply works,” says Calvin Hwung, Partnership Marketing Manager of Würth Elektroink, eiSos division.

The ZSPM15xx product family is in full production. Parts and evaluation kits are available from ZMDI. For 1,000 pieces, the products are priced at EUR 0.87 or USD $1.22 per unit.
