Beyond lithium — the search for a better battery

As the world’s power needs grow, the search is on for better battery technology — not just to keep smartphones charged for longer, but to run electric cars and to store energy produced by solar and wind power. For the last 25 years, the lithium-ion battery, has held sway. Packing a large amount of energy into a relatively small space

The energy-storage frontier: Lithium-ion batteries and beyond

By:  Elizabeth A. Kócs George Crabtree Lynn Trahey Materials play a critical enabling role in many energy technologies, but their development and commercialization often follow an unpredictable and circuitous path. In this article, we illustrate this concept with the history of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, which have enabled unprecedented personalization of our lifestyles through portable information and communication technology. These remarkable

CATL boosts battery cell factory in Germany to 100GWh

CATL factory could be at least as big as Tesla’s Gigafactory The Chinese battery cell manufacturer CATL has updated the plans for its German battery factory in Erfurt, giving it a boost. The reason for this is the coming of stricter CO2 requirements in Europe. CATL considers a capacity of up to 100 GWh in Thuringia to be realistic. Our

Cold-Tolerant Electrolyte Found for Lithium-Metal Batteries

Finding economical ways to replace the graphite anodes in commercial lithium-ion batteries could lead to lighter batteries that can store more charge. The improved energy density would result from a combination of factors including the lithium-metal anode’s high specific capacity, light weight (low density), and low electrochemical potential. Switching to lithium-metal anodes would greatly extend the range of electric vehicles
